Think in outlines.
Keep plain markdown.

Outsmile is a keyboard-driven outliner that works on plain markdown files. Headings and lists turn into a collapsible, zoomable outline, and the file stays exactly what you'd write by hand.

Privacy

Your notes never leave
your Mac. Unless you want them to.

You should own what you type. Notes are where you think out loud, and nobody should be reading along: no company, no server, no uninvited third party between you and your words.

So there's no Outsmile account and no Outsmile cloud. The app doesn't sync, upload or phone home. Your notes are ordinary markdown files in a folder you pick, and nothing happens to them that you didn't decide.

01
You own the files

Plain .md, with no IDs, no metadata and no database. Folds and zoom are stored separately, so the file is only what you wrote.

02
No cloud by default

The app makes no network requests. A link opens in your browser only when you ⌘-click it.

03
No lock-in

Open the same files in Obsidian, iA Writer, VS Code or vim. Put them in git. Stop using Outsmile tomorrow and lose nothing.

Want them on another device? Put the folder wherever you like.

What's on disk

The outline is
the file.

This is the exact file behind the recordings below. Outsmile reads it as an outline and saves it back in the same shape. It even keeps your line endings.

  • Autosaves as you type, with atomic writes so a crash can't leave half a file
  • Edited the file somewhere else, or did your sync app change it? It reloads, merges when both sides changed, and asks you only if the edits clash
  • Daily snapshots of every file you edit, kept for 14 days

Zoom

Focus on one
branch.

Press ⌘. or click a bullet to zoom into any item, so it becomes the whole page. Breadcrumbs take you back up. Everything else stays out of the way until you need it.

Collapse

See the shape,
not the noise.

Fold anything with ⌘↑. A halo on the bullet shows there's more inside. Folds, zoom and caret are remembered for each file, and none of that touches the markdown.

  • Headings nest what's below them, lists nest by indentation
  • Move an item with everything under it: ⌘⇧↑ ↓
  • Tasks, stars, [[links]] between files, and a way to hide what's done

Keyboard first

Hands stay on the keys.

Move and indent. ⌘⇧↑ ↓ carries an item with its children, ⇥ and ⇧⇥ change its depth.
Star. ⌘D puts a yellow star in the bullet. Press again to remove it.
Starred and outline. ⌘] opens a sidebar with the page's stars and its outline.
Files. ⌘[ hides or shows the file list, esc goes back to the page.
⌘.⌘,
Zoom in and out

Into any item, and back up one level.

⌘↑⌘↓
Collapse and expand

Add ⌥ to fold or unfold everything inside.

⇥⇧⇥
Indent and outdent

Works on headings too: Tab changes the heading level.

⌘↩⌘D
Tasks and stars

Turn an item into a checkbox, tick it off, or star it.

⌘K⌘1…9
Jump between files

Fuzzy search over files and commands, or go straight to a pinned file.

⌘⇧F
Search everything

Find text across every file in your library.
